October 2009 – Saddleworth Column
A warm welcome to you, dear readers, to this new monthly feature, which will focus on tips, tricks and other helpful information in the world of PC users.
Casual internet surfers, downloaders of films and music or file-sharing fanatics are the topic for this month. Why? Because you’re at risk.
Even casual users are now in the rather curious position of having to fight off threats from people they don’t know, sending them things they don’t want, from countries they’ve never heard of – like our typical virus.
A brief glance at the Wikipedia entry for Computer Viruses (all) serves as devastatingly boring reading material, but quite an eye-opener at the sheer fecundity of the computer virus. As an example, the W32/MyDoom. A virus, at one time, accounted for 1 in 12 of all emails being distributed worldwide. If – at this point – you are beginning to despair, don’t! There are simple (and free) ways you can avoid such an intrusion.
AVG anti-virus, as an example, is freely available, is updated on an almost daily basis and protects you from countless data threats in real-time.
You don’t need to invest in hundreds of pounds worth of anti-virus software to protect yourself, but you do need to make yourself aware of the dangers and what they look like.
But, when in doubt, give us a call. We’re here to help.

Hello, and welcome to GCE!
A warm welcome to you, if this is your first time meeting us online.
Genesys Computer Engineers, based in Saddleworth and proud members of our community, was established six months ago by our Directors. Born out of PHD Computers, which has been in business in the local area for many years, we have rapidly expanded our services and staff. We are now poised to become one of the most successful IT firms along the M62 corridor.
From in-home computer repairs to advanced VoIP applications such as virtual PBX, in-office VoIP telephony and HotSpot installations, we are now your full-service IT firm in Saddleworth.
We are also proud supporters of our community’s young people. We provide excellent work-experience positions, on-the-job training with our staff of trained professionals and are presently in the process of being vetted for the ‘New Deal’, which places unemployed British workers with firms willing to help them get back on their feet.
